Bllok: everything you need to know before living there

· 6 min read

Bllok is the first name you hear when someone asks "where should I live in Tirana?" — and for good reason: it's the centre of the city's social life. But the centre of nightlife and a good neighbourhood for everyday living aren't always the same thing. This is the guide to read before, not after, signing the lease.

The vibe and who lives there

Today Bllok is a mix of young Albanian professionals, foreigners working at nearby embassies/international organisations, and owners who inherited the old villas and converted them into premium rental apartments. The density of cafés and restaurants per square metre is higher than anywhere else in Tirana.

2026 rent prices

  • Studio / 1-bedroom: typically €450–650/month, depending on condition and distance from the main strip.
  • 2-bedroom: €700–1,000/month, with big variation depending on renovation and floor.
  • New/luxury apartments: can easily exceed €1,200/month.

These are among the highest prices in the city — partly because new supply is limited by the historic status of many buildings (see the neighbourhood's history for why).

Restaurants, cafés and nightlife

This is the famous part — and the part to weigh carefully if you want quiet sleep. The main streets (Ibrahim Rugova, Sami Frashëri) stay lively late into the night, especially on weekends. If you're a light sleeper, pick a side street one or two blocks from the main noise — the difference in quiet is dramatic for just a few metres of distance.

Schools and families with kids

Bllok isn't the obvious first choice for families with young children — there are no kindergartens/schools within the area itself, and the density plus traffic make it less "walk to school" friendly. Some private institutions sit in neighbouring areas (Komuna e Parisit, Rruga e Kavajës). Families who want Bllok's energy but more space for kids often choose its immediate periphery instead.

Transport

The big upside: the central location means most of the city is reachable in 10-15 minutes on foot or by taxi. The downside: parking. Streets are narrow, planned for far fewer vehicles than circulate today; private building parking, when available, raises rent noticeably. Bus lines mostly run along the area's edges (Dëshmorët e Kombit, Myslym Shyri), not through Bllok itself.

Who should choose Bllok

  • Young professionals without a car who want everything within walking distance.
  • Anyone who works or goes out often at night and values proximity to venues.
  • Short-term rentals/Airbnb — tourist demand here is among the highest in the city.

Who should avoid it

  • Families with young children wanting outdoor space and quiet.
  • Anyone on a below-average budget — the cheapest neighbourhoods offer more space for the same money.
  • Anyone with a car who wants easy, free parking.
